As a result, many of the remaining businesses either failed and closed or relocated in the 1970s. When Route 66 was bypassed with I-44 in the 1960s, the town lost a significant amount of commerce due to the diverted traffic. Avilla started to decline in the 1940s after World War II, when greater numbers of people began moving to larger industrial cities for job opportunities.
